Fellow freshmen and best friends Bonnie Clark and Mandy Barfield join the Indian Bluff High School Cross Country team and prove to be good enough to run on the varsity.

Seniors Beth Peters and Tara Hansen, who have been on the team throughout their high school years and hope to keep their varsity spots, feel threatened by the talented newcomers.

Beth builds up a real resentment and, with Tara's help, schemes to get Bonnie and Mandy kicked off the team. The ensuing trouble threatens to derail Indian Bluff's promising season.
