Messages from a Distant Star is a story of the past and the present: of the child, Sara Cotting, born into the middle-class white world and brought up in a small-town society split by racial segregation and discrimination; and of the adult, now Sara Cotting Nilsson, confronted by reminders of her childhood and discovering that much of the past has lived into the present.
Author Helen Sanford Wilhelm grew up in a small town in North Carolina, married a Swiss economist, taught English and history in North Carolina schools, and worked in rural development in Mexico and El Salvador. She now lives in Switzerland, where she taught American literature for sixteen years.
